5 Podcasts for the Sophisticated Man

| Posted by Arlo Bush

Podcasts are layered with rich content that could launch you into a whole new mental state and potentially inspire you to take a new outlook on life. We love to plug in our earbuds, turn on a stimulating podcast, and take a long walk around the city, so we thought we should be more thoughtful and share these with you! Here are our top five picks for the sophisticated and intelligent man.

  • Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History | Typically pretty lengthy podcasts, these episodes are centered around storytelling about pieces of history that you may not know the details of. Dan Carlin dives deep into the storyline, revealing and uncovering chunks of history you have probably forgotten about since the old days sitting behind your desk in the classroom. Think of this like an educational audiobook that will last you for a few walks or brighten your morning commute.
  • Adventure Sports Podcast | Presented by 180 Tack, this podcast is literally all you need to get the inspiration to get outdoors - today (one of the pillars we stand by here at Northern Fir). After listening to an episode, you will undoubtedly crave an adventure very soon, and the best part is, the host Curt Linville asks the hard-hitting questions like how one affords travel, what the local trail guides are like, and how one navigates the language barriers. There are hundreds of options to choose from, and each one is rich with adventurous stories from around the globe.
  •

  • TED Talks Daily | Short and quick bits of information that will peak your curiosity about how things work, ways to improve your work life, inspiring others, and so much more. Similar to TED Talks, these are bite-sized digestible chunks of information that never cease to be interesting and thought-provoking.
  •

  • HBR IdeaCast | Harvard Business Review’s podcast for leading thinkers and businessmen. This is the go-to for new and innovative ideas to get your imagination buzzing and wondering what you have up your sleeve to present to the world.
  •

  • NPR’s How to Do Everything | Hosted by Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! producers Mike Danforth and Ian Chillag, this podcast covers everything from the simple solutions like how to spread cold butter on toast to stopping a sinkhole. They even brought on a guest to tell a listener how to look cool while standing outside a coffee shop. Half advice show, and half survival guide, this show will answer all of your questions, and if they missed one, just give them a call and ask yourself!

Now, don’t take this as a sign that you should stop your monthly Spotify playlist mashups, but every now and then sprinkling some thought-provoking content into your routine can plant the seed for growth, which will be beneficial in both your professional and your personal life. These podcasts help us get through the day and always make us excited to start tomorrow. Enjoy!
